LumaFusion 2.0 introduces a host of powerful new features and an elegant new UI. The simple-start timeline gives new users an intuitive head start, and professionals will find. From the LumaFusion Share / Export menu you can choose “XML Project Package”. Then you can select to export this to a directory of your choice in Files, or AirDrop directly to a Mac on your network. LumaFusion will then prompt you to choose XML Settings.

Download LumaPix::FotoFusion for Mac to create albums and composites to share via print, web or email. Davinci is great especially on a Mac computer. But Davinci on a run of the mill PC is very slow at video playback while editing. I use lumafusion on an iPad Pro and playback during editing is great, it is my current editing setup.

There is no extra compression or re-encoding. You will also archive a copy of the project file. The archived project file will connect to the archived media. When you restore a project, the archived media will be placed into the User Media folder in the LumaFusion app. This means that the media is not available or viewable in the Photos app. Does this answer your question? regards Androu Morgan LumaTouch

You say there’s no loss even when the video files are cut when choosing the optimized option for archiving. That’s good news ! The reason why this is important for me is because since there’s no proper noise/flickering reduction option for videos on iOS, my workflow for now is : 1- edit in LumaFusion 2- export the project to Mac and extract the video files from the project archive 3- use FCPX and neat video plugin for noise/flickering reduction and color correction/grading and the exported media 4- import the video files back to LumaFusion and reconcile the optimized media manually That’s a lot of work but I prefer working on my iPad. Steps 2 to 4 should be easier when you bring us the Mac software. Ideally all of this should be done in LumaFusion but even though I think color correction/grading could be done on iOS, i won’t hold my breath for proper noise/flickering reduction, on par with neat video, on iOS anytime soon. That’s unfortunate. If anyone has a better workflow let me know ! PS : Androu, i’ve already talked to you about my difficulties to archive a project, send it on my Mac, process the video and my wish to be able the rebuild the project archive on the Mac so that I can simply send it back to LumaFusion. Is it something I can expect in the next 1.4 release ?

Even aesthetically. Therefore, a more correct practice for me is to pre-clean and correct the original fragments before placing them in LF, because the application does not yet have enough tools to bring part of the clips to the desired condition. I'm waiting for version 1.4 and the already mentioned 1.5 (video improvements). Often you have to use Deshake and more advanced light-color correction in VideoGrade; to clean up the original fragments of sound in Denoise, etc. Either way, this is an iterative process. That's why I prefer do the cut and then process the final edit later (typically only a few minutes instead of potential hours of footages). If I would do as you suggest, it would take me hours and hours of noise processing before I can start the edit process. Plus, I have profiles for noise reduction that are meant to be used on raw footages straight out of my camera. If I apply color correction/grading first, the profiles won't work as good. That's why it is a best practice to always apply the noise reduction effect in any NLE software, BEFORE any other effect like color correction/grading. In practice you may color correct/grade first but when exporting the movie the noise reduction would be applied first. I will investigate further and I hope Lumafusion will help in my process Cheers

Selecting only the desired region and applying pre-saved profiles, we do not waste time processing unwanted fragments and parts. Somehow it's all about the workflow. IMO, the hardware power and capacity of the mobile platform, as much as I would like it, are not yet sufficient for complex works. Therefore, in choosing your own mobile / stationary balance, so much attention is paid to achieving the maximum primary quality of the source material. But the reality so far successfully defeats these mobile attempts. That's why I'm so skeptical about the efforts of people on the stage trying to convince smiles and waving hands to talk about the sunset era of computers. This is a long process of tug-of-war. This is felt not only in the processes of video processing, but also in composing music. Although for light works like creating concepts, writing texts and surfing, I no longer use a computer. That's why, in my opinion, it's so important to develop professional applications with a predictive interface on the mobile platform, and not primitive low-quality attempts to 'cut down money'. We definitely have a goal of making as many professional workflows as possible available on mobile platforms. But we also recognize that mobile hardware will likely never match desktop (though it's amazing how far it's come), and the closed sandbox environment won't allow for the type of wide plugin community that's available on desktop, so our second goal is to make it as painless as possible to bridge mobile and desktop, and we will be bringing out more features (and products) to accommodate that. We are planning XML export in project archiving for FCP and Premiere as part of 1.5 (this may be made available a small additional in-app purchase), and while plans can change, this one is now at the top of our priority list and a part of our overall product plans, so it is coming soon.

I agree with you that mobile platforms are not quite at the level of the desktop PC... yet ! The iPad Pro/iPhone and iOS combination is getting closer and closer to the desktop world in terms of power and software. And this is where Apple really shines when it comes to optimizing hardware and software together. This is the main reason why we usually see pro apps come to iOS, at least first if not only exclusively on iOS. I think it is now only a matter of good software. And we’re getting there thanks to apps like LumaFusion or Affinity photo, which is another great example of pro software on iOS (it’s current implementation is almost on par with its Mac OS version). iOS has made great progress too. Look at h265 support, AR, metal2 just to name a few. Still, iOS has some ground for improvement too, especially if we consider the sandbox and the difficulty to adapt a plugin ecosystem, as we know it on the PC, to iOS. I'm hopeful some good solutions will come from Apple and/or third party devs. Look at Audiobus which has en ecosystem of more than 900 compatible apps ! This concept is really interesting but I don’t know how it would translate to video. Nonetheless, I think something likewise should be investigated. It’s reassuring to see devs like Luma who understand this transition and help advanced/pro users live that mobile life with its current limitations. I can’t wait to use/test the forthcoming desktop integration, especially with FCPX. My aim is to do the most on my iPad and use my Mac only for the current limitation of iOS/LumaFusion which are, for now, color correction/grading and noise reduction. And who knows, maybe be in a couple of year, thanks to the progress in codecs (better compression, less noise, smaller files), the improvement of video hardware (support for better codecs, again less noise and better image quality at an affordable price) and software (iOS, Luma and others), we will have an acceptable level of quality on mobile platforms with good workflows. The needs of prosumers and advanced users could be covered for their most common usages. @cdemiris99, do you have open slots for beta testing your iOS and Mac OS software ? I would be interested to contribute and help shape the future of LumaFusion.

Hi there castaways. Today I’d like to talk to you about an iOS and iPadOS video editor called LumaFusion from luma-touch.com/… that I use here in New Zealand to edit motovlogs, which are vlogs shot on a motorcycle, and the term also includes other videos about motorcycles, like bike reviews, road trips, garage based bike build videos and much more.
I’ve edited on Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve on a Mac for years but a few months ago switched over to using LumaFusion on the iPad and I wanted to give you a quick rundown of how I edit. This is NOT a review as I don’t feel qualified, but this is more a skim through how I edit a motovlog on it. If you’re interested, my videos are on YouTube as Black Sheep Biker.
The problem to be solved here is how to turn five hours’ worth of footage from my last day’s ride into an interesting five-minute video.
The first task is to transfer the files from my action cam onto the iPad. Using a USB card reader I copy the files directly from the micro SD card into a folder on the iPad using the Files app.
Launching Lumafusion, the main screen by default is split into three parts, consisting of a timeline on the bottom half with various editing controls, and the top is split into a source window and a monitor window. We can navigate in the source window to where we put the video files and just drag them down onto the timeline. Alternatively, you can select just part of a clip and drag that onto the timeline instead.
My editing strategy with a long video like this is to edit in passes. The first pass just to get an idea of how I can use the footage I’ve shot to make a video, and then subsequent passes I cut the video down by cutting with the scissors tool and using the trash button to delete unwanted clips, and when the video is near the desired length, frame by frame edits can be made by dragging the handles on each end of the clip to fine-tune the clips.
Lumafusion For Desktop
Once the video is down to a manageable length, it’s time to get some music. I use the unfortunately named Epidemic sound www.epidemicsound.com/…, which is a paid subscription service providing music for video creators. The small monthly payment is worth it to me as it’s saved me literally hours each time I make a video and don’t have to go looking for music.
I download some music and just drop the files into the timeline on a spare track, then by zooming in to the frame level I can match the cuts in my video to the beats in the music.
Next, I’ll add some titles and transitions. Lumafusion has a good selection of titles and transitions but I prefer just plain titles and transitions and, I try to use neutral fonts like Helvetica, but you can choose any font installed on your iPad or install your own fonts if you prefer.
Now our basic video is done, we can upload it. I use the built-in YouTube upload function and using the Snapshot Export function, I use Affinity Designer to add titles to a frame that might look good as a thumbnail. That gets exported and I add it using the YouTube Studio app while I’m adding descriptions and tags.
So that’s a basic edit done and dusted. Even if that was all LumaFusion could do, it would be a good editor. But there’s so much more.
Double-clicking on a video clip in the timeline switches to a properties window. There are whole pages of settings for speed, frame and fit, audio, and color and effects, and each page has a huge number of parameters you can change and effects you can add but what makes LumaFusion so powerful is that those parameters are all “keyframeable”.
Keyframes are a standard function in animation and video editing software that lets you define a sequence of changes to a parameter. Here in our example, we have programmed a series of changes to volume level so it starts quiet, ramps up to normal volume then back down at the end. Just click the add keyframe button once and every change you make will trigger a new keyframe to be added. Multiple parameters can be keyframed on the same clip and because there are six video tracks to play with, you can layer multiple animations on top of each other. Very powerful but completely manual, no trackers or automation. Still it’s very powerful for an iPad app. Some animations can be done in Keynote on the iPad and added as a clip in Lumafusion for even more power.
In terms of color grading, there isn’t much to speak of within Lumafusion. It’s got basic color correction tools but you can add a LUT via the LUT effect. A LUT is a Lookup Table, which is basically a mathematical transformation that changes the look of your video in some way, for instance, the infamous Teal and Orange look. These can be purchased or downloaded and applied in Lumafusion or you can even create your own in the color grading tools in Affinity Photo on the iPad and imported and applied to your clip. Or use the Final Cut Pro connector (sold separately) to send your video to FCPX for color grading and finishing.
Lumafusion now supports HDR and the latest major feature to be added is support for frame.io – that’s a professional video collaboration service, among other things it will transcode professional formats and allow you to use those proxy files in Lumafusion, then use the FCPX connector to send it across to your Mac and reconnect to the original ProRes files. That’s a whole review by itself I’d say.
Any missing features compared to Final Cut? Yes, a few:
- No Multicam editor. It’s possible to edit a multicam video manually but a multicam editor would be much easier
- No stabiliser. My current action cam has no stabiliser so this would be helpful (I’ve broken four action cams this year and this is all I have for now. I know, I know)
- No motion tracker. This is good for if you have an.. ahem.. reason to blur a speedo or license plates. Not that I’d indulge in that sort of behaviour. BUT if I did it would be good to have a tracker. That’s all I’ll admit to.
- No distortion correction. Action cams normally have a very wide fisheye lens so this is good to defish the video. Note: the latest GoPro has Linear Mode which defishes it in camera.
That’s about it. Most of those won’t be an issue for most users I’d suspect, I am a bit of an edge case I suspect.
So is LumaFusion adequate as a replacement for FCPX? Mostly I think yes. I bought the FCPX connector but have not used it in a year, maybe when I get delusions of adequacy and start doing cinematic motovlogs I’ll wish for color wheels. Oh well. Other than that, I’ll just say the Files app sucks for transferring large amounts of data. No progress indicator of any kind and if you let it go to sleep the transfer crashes. Sucky.
